What are some good essay topics? They can't be super easy or super hard :)

It depends on what mode of writing your assignment calls for.  Argumentative essays are easiest to write when you start with a controversial question, one which poses two opposite sides.  Expository essays, however, are simply essays which explain something.  My best advice is to choose a topic that is interesting to you, so you can use real life examples or at least base your research direction on your own feelings.

Essays that intrigue readers are ones that contain universal truths; that is, some observation about existence. The topic of an effective essay, then, is one to which others can relate and one which contains a thesis statement that can be supported with examples, facts or statistics, opinions of professionals and the like. Indeed, the support for an essay is absolutely essential.

To help you begin, if you must choose your own topic, find meaningful passages or statements of writers or important people and see if their ideas ignite the spark for your own.

Interesting essays usually have a topic that is arguable. The reader or audience is more engaged if they are reading with the intent of being persuaded to see your point (thesis). That doesn't mean it has to be a "big" topic like the death penalty or gun control laws. You could write a great paper on why you think student's should have more homework; or less homework. You could try to persuade your audience that gym class should be optional in high school. Write about something that matters to you!

If you are writing about a piece of literature, a good essay topic might involve focusing on some part of the work of literature that makes it effective, memorable, or successful as a piece of writing. This is a topic that is often neglected in the study of literature, since readers are often interested in deciding what the work is "about" rather than how -- and how well -- it is written.

A good essay topic is a topic in which you are interested and knowledgeable! As the previous post suggests, you should find an area about which you have some awareness and an opinion that can become the basis of your thesis statement. The body of your essay then becomes your opportunity to present the evidence that supports your opinion.

While I cannot suggest a good topic for you, because all people are different. I can give you a few principles to use, so that you can choose a good topic for yourself.

First, all good essays have a thesis statement. This basically means that you must have a main point of the paper. Moreover, a good thesis statement is debatable. There will be some people who agree with your thesis statement and others who disagree. For example, a good thesis statement would be: Antigone is more tragic than Oedipus. Not all people would agree with this statement. So, your thesis that Antigone is more tragic is now part of the debate.

Second, all good essays should have supporting points. In other words, you simply cannot have a thesis; you need to support that thesis. To use the example thesis above, why do you think Antigone is more tragic? The better your reasons are, the better your thesis will be.
