There is much sadness in The Chosen. There is personal sadness, as when Danny tries to apologize for breaking Reuven's glasses. There is a historical and collective sadness, which the older Jews in the story carry from their losses in the Holocaust. There is a kind of spiritual sadness, or rather, several kinds: Danny is sad over his father's lack of emotional expression, while his father accepts the need for suffering.
