What are some examples of Rahim being a better father then Baba?
Rahim was a better father than Baba in that he was affectionate with his son. He took interest in everything his son was doing and feeling. Baba was distant with Amir. He did not show interest in his writing, nor take his feelings seriously. His main interest was in "outward appearances" rather than the changes that his son was experiencing within himself. When Rahim and his son had to leave, Rahim was concerned more with his son than with what Baba needed. His son was his life; Baba's life was his social standing. It wasn't until the end, when Baba went to Amir's girlfriend's dad to ask her hand for his son in marriage, even though he was seriously ill, that Baba showed the kind of love for Amir that he should have shown all along.
Rahim is a better father for a child like Amir. He is supportive of Amir's writing. On page 32, Rahim writes Amir a letter encouraging Amir to continue with his writing. Amir wishes that Rahim had been his father. (32) Baba, Amir's father, is not nterested in Amir's writing. When Rahim takes his story to him he barely responds.
"Baba nodded and gave a thin smile that conveyed little more than feigned interest."
Amir's father expects Amir to have more courage. It is not in Amir's nature to fight. His father sees him as being weak. Amir always feels like he disappoints his won father.
"I didn't want to disappoint him again."(17)
