You are correct! A Mercy by Toni Morrison is more than a slave story; it shows many examples of love.
There are good relationships between people who show love. Try looking at the relationship between Jacob and Rebekka. Rebekka was Jabob's mail-order bride who surprisingly fell in love with one another. Willard, an indentured servant, and Scully present another type of love as the two men are a couple. Even Florens love (or lust) can show love in the book.
Throughout the book, Morrison shows that families are not built on blood, but they are often built on love. There is a love that a parent figure has for a child. Florens feels that her mother favors her brother and does not love her, but her mother's sacrifices were a mother's sacrifices to save her child. Sorrow shows love towards her only living child. Even people who are not related show this kind of love. Look at the love Lina has for Florens and though Florens was her own daughter.
