Sleep texting refers to any type of communication on an electronic device that is done during various stages of sleep. It can manifest itself through simple text messages, or through posts to popular social media sites like Twitter and Instagram.
Due to the novelty of social media and smartphone technology, scientific studies of the phenomena do not currently exist. In general, anecdotal accounts of its existence are reported. Medical professionals and sleep experts liken the behavior to sleep walking in that the subjects do not recall actually performing the tasks when they awake. They also attribute the behavior to the habitual nature of sending text messages during the day and the over-reliance of this means of communication by younger people. Fortunately, there is an easy solution to the problem of sleep texting: shut off the phone and put it in a different room.
