In today’s globalized world, there are two reasons why teaching students about diversity and citizenship is important and significant.

First, this is important in a pragmatic sort of a way.  What this means is that teaching students about these things can help those students get ahead in life.  In today’s world, it is very likely that students will eventually be working with people who are different from them.  If they are to succeed in the workplace, they will need to be able to work well with people from other cultures.  If our schools teach them about diversity and citizenship, they will be more likely to get along with people of other cultures.  This will make them more employable when they are adults.

Second, this is important in a less tangible sort of a way.  Many of the students of today will end up living among people from other cultures.  Their lives will be easier and happier if they are able to understand that this is not a bad thing.  If they are comfortable around people of other cultures, it is likely that their lives will be easier and less stressful in today’s world.
