The significance of the lemon battery is that it demonstrates how electricity may flow across a small electrical potential difference.  A strip of zinc and a nail are inserted into a lemon.  They react with the lemon juice to serve as a cathode (+) and an anion (-) across which a flow of electrons may travel, strong enough to light a small light bulb.
