This is a very difficult issue for Israel because it tries to be a democratic country yet it is in a situation that makes it easy for people to want to stifle dissent.

It is easy to be tolerant and have freedom of speech and such here in the US where we face no real threats to our existence.  Contrast this with Israel where they are surrounded by enemies and are quite unpopular with much of the rest of the world.  Of course, you can argue that this is partly their own fault, but it still gives them a sense of needing to unify against a hostile world.

When your people have this sort of a sense, it is easy for people to start to want to punish those within your country who seem to be taking the side of the enemy.  So this is regrettable but understandable.
