Foodborne illnesses may be caused by bacteria, parasites or viruses. Depending on the cause of the foodborne illness, it may be treated in different ways.
If someone suffers from nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, they should drink plenty of fluids. Pedialyte, Oralyte or Ceralyte may help with electrolyte replacement. An anti-diarrheal medicine that can be purchased over the counter may also provide symptomatic relief.
However, someone should consult a physician if they experience bloody stools, high fever, diarrhea that lasts for more than three days, excessive vomiting, inability to urinate or dizziness.
Antibiotics may be used to treat foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria. However, if a foodborne illness is caused by a virus, then antibiotics will not be an effective treatment. The illness will then have to run its course.
