Adam's father is a navy commander aboard a ship called the Arizona. At the end of the second chapter Adam cycles to Ford Island where all the battleships are moored and where he says his father's ship has just come in.

Adam says he enjoys it when his father's ship comes back into port because his father, as an officer, is allowed to stay at the family home. However, Adam admits that his father can make the atmosphere at home quite tense. As a military man, for example, he always expects Adam to arrive on time to greet him.

Adam's father eventually dies with the rest of his crew during the attack on Pearl Harbor. As the author states in the author's note at the end, the bodies aboard the USS Arizona were never recovered.
