Legrand lives near Charleston, South Carolina on an island named Sullivan's Island. He lives in a hut and it is a fairly isolated existence. He only has his servant, Jupiter , and his dog for company. It is here that the narrator comes to visit.

There are also events that take place in Charleston. Some time later, Jupiter, Legrand's servant, comes to call on the narrator at his Charleston office. The servant brings a request for the narrator to come back to the island to talk over a matter with Legrand.
