The Three Sisters” is a play written in 1900 by Russian author and playwright Anton Chekhor. It tells the story of Olga, Masha, and Irinia Prozorov, who are sisters living in a small Russian town. They live with their brother, Andrey, after the death of their father, who was a Colonel in the Russian army. The town they live in is never named, and nothing exciting ever happens in the town. The three sisters dream of returning to the large city of Moscow where they were raised. They believe that their life will be much better if they return to Moscow instead of staying in this dull town. Most of the story takes place in and around their large home, during the late 1800s.

“Three Sisters” takes place in and around the Prozorov family home outside an unnamed town in an unidentified province in Russia. It seems like many miles away from much excitement, and one of the most significant things about “Three Sisters” is where it doesn’t take place: Moscow. The sisters lived in Moscow when they were younger, and over the course of their lives Moscow has come to represent all their dreams and longings, the place where their lives will fall into place if they can only find a way to move back there. They each in their own way feel trapped by their circumstances, but whether or not a move to Moscow really would solve all their problems or would simply transfer their feelings of disenchantment to another place is one of the many themes in the play.
