What is the setting of the novel (time and place)?
In this contemporary novel by Judy Blume, the novel is set in the present. Since it was written in the 1970s, it's contemporaneous to that era. But as with Blume's other novels, there is a timeless quality to the prose that can make the novel accessible to future generations of young readers. The author does not focus on current events or identifiers such as celebrity names or popular culture referents.
I read this novel in my early teens and I think it would still be relevant to teens today, since it chronicles a teenager's first love and first sexual experience. Such a story has universal themes that have not changed dramatically in the last 40 years.
