The Stage Manager in Our Town is the only character in the play who does not have a given name; he also has minimal involvement in the actual daily lives of most of the characters who are named and remembered in the play. Instead, the Stage Manager's role is that of a narrator, a provider of explanations and added details, and a source of insight into the situations portrayed. The Stage Manager's meditations help the audience to understand the relationships between the characters and between their story and the audience's story.
