Scientist use a practice called taxonomy to name specific types of organisms.  Taxonomy allows scientists to create a hierarchical structure of classification.  Each part of the name connects that species with its common ancestors as well as its particular group.  Cats are a great example of this type of classification.  Felis (or Felidae) is the term for the taxonomic group containing seven species of cats.  A domestic house cat is referred to a as Felis catus.  The Felis lets us know that it is a cat while the catus referrer to the specific species of domestic house cat.  Another type of cat is the Felis chaus, or the Jungle Cat of Southeast Asia.  The group Felidae includes many types of cats such as lions, tigers, ocelots, bobcats, and many more.
