Construction technology professionals can play a major role in the gas and oil industries of both developing nations and established nations. One of the biggest challenges in developing oil and gas reserves here on the planet is accessing the fuels while minimizing environmental and ecological damage to the planet itself. Many older methods of extracting fossil fuels are no longer acceptable in the modern world of advanced engineering and environmental awareness. One particular area where advanced construction engineering is required is with the extraction of natural gas from shale deposits under the earth. This process is called hydraulic fracturing (or fracking for short) and it currently involves the pumping of copious amounts of water and chemicals deep into the earth's crust to free the trapped gas deposits. There are many environmental concerns over this, especially with tainting an area's water supply for people and animals. Engineering advances in this area will allow nations to more safely extract natural gas without doing major damage to local environments.
