Science plays a part in figuring out how to get rid of the overabundance of products produced by all three super powers. A constant state of war keeps them working, which keeps them producing. However, if all products were allowed into the public, there would be too much--which evolves to no reason to work. Society would die since everyone would have equal amounts or at least more than they need. Laziness would ensue, then of course, disharmony. Perhaps even rebellion.
Therefore, science plays its part in helping to destroy the surplus material produced so that each nation would have reason to continue pushing its citizens to work and be productive members of society.
