Gender plays a prominent role in Orwell's classic novel 1984 as Winston Smith attempts to retain his sanity and humanity through his relationship with Julia. In the dystopian nation of Oceania, the totalitarian regime does not discriminate in regards to gender as male and female Party members are treated equally. However, the government does attempt to completely eliminate sexual attraction and love from society. The government regulates marriages by matching spouses and forms organizations dedicated to polluting the idea and concept of sex. For example, the Junior Anti-Sex League champions artificial insemination and attempts to take all private and personal joy out of sexual intercourse. The Party preaches that sex should only be tolerated for purposes of procreation. By regulating sex and prohibiting citizens from forming meaningful relationships founded on love, the Party attempts to focus their members' pent-up energy towards Goldstein and other political rivals.
