In order to maximize this consistency, a teacher's role is to facilitate and support family-centered approaches to learning, working alongside the student's family to offer a more encompassing education.

This synergy can be particularly important in the social aspects of education. For example, if a student is behaving in a way that a teacher finds inappropriate or alarming, rather than simply punishing the student, a family-centered approach may involve teacher–family meetings in which the parent(s), child, and teacher are involved in discussing the behaviors and creating goal-oriented solutions that can be consistently implemented at home and at school. For instance, the teacher could help establish a positive-reinforcement reward system used both in the classroom and at home that reinforces the desired behavior from the child. The role of the teacher in the family-centred approach is significant. The teacher is usually the person who leads this process of education. In order for this approach to be successful, a teacher needs to ensure that there is effective dialogue between the teachers and parents. Parents need to be kept up to date with regard to what is being taught at school or nursery.

For parents to know how to best support the teachers at home and to implement the new skills taught at school in their home life, the teachers need to share the curriculum with the parents. Likewise, parents need to feel comfortable in communicating with the teacher to report on any events going on at home, or inform the teacher of any successes or issues in the learning taking place at home.

This means that in a family-centred approach, the role of the teacher is to be an instructor, communicator, and facilitator of learning. It is important for both parents and teachers to be part of the learning process of the child and to share the decision-making process. This allows parents and teachers to learn from each other, and that way they can produce the best possible outcome for their children.
