The Party utilizes contradictions and paradoxes to manipulate, control, and oppress Oceania's population. In the novel, Orwell explores and analyzes the way authoritarian regimes manipulate language to control the masses. The Party slogans are prime examples of paradoxes used to confuse the ignorant populace. The following are the Party's slogans:

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Each slogan seems illogical but contains a hidden truth. The authoritarian regime is continually at war, which uses up industrial resources and maintains a constant atmosphere of hysteria. As a result of the continuous war, the frightened, economically-oppressed populace is peaceful and obedient. Once a Party member completely submits to Big Brother, they become free while they are simultaneously living oppressed lives. Big Brother is also able to remain supreme due to the population's ignorance. The practice of doublethink enables Party members to simultaneously believe two different thoughts....
