What role did reading play in Luke's knowledge of the outside world in Among the Hidden?

The books and articles that Jen gives to Luke to read end up confusing him. They all contradict each other, so Luke has no idea what the truth is. He also discovers this in the people in his life. They don't seem to tell him the truth either, so Luke finally decides he can only depend on himself. The books and articles peak Luke's curiosity and make him want to go out and see the world for himself, but he isn't able to for the longest time. Jen has more of an influence on Luke than anything else.
