What is the role of captain in the book, or analyse his role to me   his role

An illustration of the letter 'A' in a speech bubbles

Cap serves in many ways to act as a foil or at least an example of the opposite way of looking at and acting within the world to most of the West Indian population that fills the pages of the story.

His absolute disregard for many of the societal norms and the customs of the places in which he lives serves as a contrast to the desire for everyone else in the story to find some way of clinging to or finding shelter within those same norms.  His absolute confidence in his own ability and in some ways his own invincability holds him up as a stark contrast to the behavior of Moses and many of the other characters.
