Uttarakhand is a state within India and can be found in the northern part of that country, bordering with Tibet. Uttarakhand has a diverse geography that includes both high snow-capped mountains and dense tropical forests at lower elevations. The mountains found in the northern region of Uttarakhand are part of the Himalayan Range. These mountains are important for a couple of reasons. First, it is within the mountains of Uttarakhand that two of India’s most important rivers originate, the Ganges River and the Yamuna River. Second, the mountains also provide a habitat for rare and threatened species of both plants and animals.
