Power is the ability to influence others within one's environment. Power can be gained through several means such as having education, financial power, social status, access to information, or connections within the community. Power can also be gained by having the ability to help others reach their goals. When these factors are in place an individual can have the ability to influence how others will act, how decisions will be made, or how others will behave.
An example of this would be a manager within a company. The manager has education which provides them the education to understand concepts related to their field. They also have financial power so they can influence employee behavior as they control potential raises and maybe even funding for projects that employees work on. The manager also controls access to information as they are the conduit to upper management and what is occurring within the company. These factors mean that the manager has power over the employee's professional lives and has the ability to influence their behavior within the workplace.
