Imperialism has to do with the desire of one country or culture to colonize another. This can take many forms, from political or military subjugation to cultural domination. In either case, the principle of of imperialism is to impose the "superior" civilization of the colonizer on the "uncivilized" colonized peoples, while at the same time exploiting the natural resources, labor power, and cultural capital of the colonized to enrich the colonizers.

Edward Said's concept of "Orientalism" is deployed in relation to imperialism and is a way of critiquing the imperialist mindset. Said argues that the West's view of non-Western cultures as "exotic" is part of a larger ideology which simultaneously idealizes and infantilizes the non-Western. The "orientalist" mindset constructs the non-Western as separate or "other" from the "civilized" colonizer and promotes the development of cultural hierarchies (in which one culture is presumed to be better than others).
