The real name of the black giant captured by Rosh's men is never given.  The giant is mute, and no verbal dialogue is ever exchanged between him and his captors.  The giant was targeted because of his size and obvious strength - his "huge arms could crack the ribs of a man as easily as a child could snap a twig", and Rosh felt that he would be a valuable asset in his planned fight to free the Jews from Roman oppression.  The men christen the captive "Samson", (not Simon), because of his great strength.

When the giant is first captured and the men realize that he cannot or will not communicate with them, they throw out ideas about what they should call him.  "Samson" is suggested, as well as "Goliath", the Biblical giant defeated by the shepherd David in 1 Samuel, Chapter 17.  That evening, when Daniel returns after leaving the group for a short time, he discovers that the men have settled on a name for the captive - "Samson" (Chapter 2).

Samson was a Biblical character known for his amazing physical strength.  This Samson was called from birth to deliver the Israelites from the Philistines, and his power was dependent on him not cutting his hair.  His story can be found in the Book of Judges, Chapters 13-16.
