The community in which Jonas, his family and friends, and the Giver live appears to use unscheduled holidays as a rare opportunity for the residents to have some unstructured time in which they may choose activities for themselves. Of course, the on-going needs of the community are met on that day - some people will work as Nurturers and for Food Production on the holiday and will have another unscheduled day at some time in the future. But for the majority of the community, the holiday is a time to participate in pleasurable activities that are not a part of the established routine which fills the normal daily schedule.
