At the beginning of the story, the young Republican sniper stationed on a rooftop near the O’Connell Bridge takes a risk by lighting a cigarette after he finishes eating his first meal of the day. Almost immediately after the Republican sniper lights his cigarette, a bullet strikes the edge of the parapet, and he realizes that there is an enemy sniper posted on the opposite rooftop. After the sniper takes cover behind a chimney stack, he notices an armored car drive across the bridge and advance slowly up the street. The armored car then parks about fifty yards away from the building where the Republican sniper is stationed, and he watches as a woman approaches the vehicle. The older woman is an informer, and the sniper witnesses her point out his position to the man in the armored car's turret. As soon as the man opens the turret and his head appears, the Republican sniper aims and fires, killing the man instantly. The older woman attempts to run to safety but the sniper guns her down before he begins taking fire from the enemy sniper stationed on the opposite rooftop.
