Protocells are claimed to be the first type of cells that were in existence. The theory states that there were a small colony of protocells that were in a symbiotic relationship. These protocells survived in an environment with what we consider as 'limited resources'. This limited environment contributed to their simplicity in structure and function. Over time, these protocells developed into the cells we know of today.
