What proof is there that Nick was a creative student with ideas and action plans even before he entered the 5th grade?
The story Frindle by Andrew Clements details how fifth-grade class clown Nick Allen gets a new word added to the dictionary. When Nick finds a pen he decides to call it "frindle," a decision that his teacher strongly opposes, but that the other children at his school love. Eventually the word spreads beyond the school to the entire country, and is added to the dictionary. At the end of the novel it is revealed that Nick's teacher pretended to be opposed to the idea to encourage the popularity of the word.
Nick was creative before fifth grade however. The story begins with a description of how Nick slowly turned his third-grade classroom into a tropical paradise with the help of his fellow students. First, Nick persuaded the students to make palm trees out of paper and tape them to desks. Then, he persuades the girls to wear flowers in their hair and the boys to wear sunglasses. He goes on to turn the thermostat up, and all of the children take off their shoes.
In the fourth grade, Nick discovers that it can be hard to trace where high pitched "peep" noise. Nick begins making these peeps frequently, and he enlists the help of his neighbour Janet Fisk. All of these ideas are creative and take a great deal of time to implement. They also involve inspiring many students, and the befuddlement of teachers.
