Some conflicts develop in these opening chapters that involve the protagonist, Jonas. First, the reader is given a clue that Jonas is not an ordinary child when the incident with the apple is described. Jonas remembers that while tossing an apple back and forth with his friend Asher, "...the apple had changed...It had happened four times." This foreshadows the abilities that lead Jonas to be chosen as the new Receiver.

Also in these early chapters we meet the newchild Gabriel. It is Gabriel's fate later in the story that prompts Jonas to flee the community to save the newchild from being Released.
