A production possibility frontier is a way of showing the impact of opportunity costs.  It shows how making one thing takes away from an economy's ability to make another.  It also shows the amount of production that is possible in an economy and can show how efficiently an economy is producing.  Any essay questions you write would have to address one of these two topics.

The questions that are most conducive to essay writing would touch on the second topic identified above -- that of an economy's potential.  You might ask one or more of the following questions:

  • What might cause a country to produce at a point inside the PPF?
  • How can the PPF be moved in one direction or another?
  • How can a country move from producing inside the PPF to producing at a point on the PPF?
