As a teacher, anytime I prepare a quiz, for any class or subject, I try to stay to the same basic guidelines:
* Am I asking questions that cover the material I expected them to learn?
* Are the questions reasonable to expect them to know?
* Is it possible to complete the quiz in the time allowed, or will it take too little time?
* Are the questions appropriately mixed in terms of responses - short answer, essay, fill in the blank, etc.
* Are the questions equal to the number of points assigned for each (as opposed to a test where they might be worth more)
* Is the student's knowledge of the key concepts of the unit or chapter or topic accurately measured by these questions?
When designing a science quiz the first thing that one has to determine is what the person is assessing. Are you assessing the content of a previous lesson, the correlation of data, graph interpretation, or application of the materials?
The next thing one needs to determine is the age group and grade level of the test. A teacher wants to ensure that the test and lessons have been correlated to the science objectives from the Standard Course of Study guidelines in science.
Are there modifications for students with disabilities? For example, did you review the student's modifications as written in his/her Individualized Education Plan? How can they be applied to the test? Does the test need to be read allowed to the student? Does the student need bold face print?
Do the test materials provide for fair feedback? One very important component is not designing a test that includes the wording of "not" in it. For example: Which one of the following is not a good example of soil erosion. The End of Grade tests seldom use this method of questioning in them and the teacher needs to align tests so that they will help the student to be able to interpret end of grade and end of course tests as well.
The last thing I also think of is if any additional materials will need to be used to complete the test. For example, a TI83 calculator or a copy of the periodic table. Are the handouts legible and if there is labeling to be done by the student, will it line up correctly and not confuse the student?
