As with most fairy tales, this one has several different versions, but the basic outline is as follows:

A poor man and his pregnant wife live near a witch's garden. The wife sickens and craves the rapunzel (lettuce) growing in the garden. The desperate husband steals some and is caught by the witch. She says he can have all the rapunzel we wants in exchange for the baby. He agrees.

The couple give their baby girl to the witch. When the girl, whom the witch names Rapunzel, turns twelve, the witch locks her in a high tower with no door and only one window. Rapunzel has very long hair, and when the witch wants to visit, she calls, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your golden hair."

A prince hears Rapunzel singing. Spying on her, he sees how the witch gains access to her. He too asks her to let down her golden hair. She does so, and he climbs up to her. They fall in love, but when the witch finds out about him, she is enraged. She separates the two and casts them from the tower. They wander and are eventually reunited to live happily ever after.

There are several variants on the tale, which is told in the Grimm brothers' book of fairy tales, among others, but, in the end, the two lovers are reunited.

The basic plot of the fairy tale Rapunzel starts before the main character's birth.  A pregnant woman has a craving for the food she sees in a witch's garden.  The woman's husband promises the witch she can have the child if he can have the food.  The child is born and given to the witch.  Eventually the witch locks her in a tower with no door.  The child, Rapunzel, hangs her long hair out of the window for the witch to climb up.  One day, a prince finds the tower and starts to visit Rapunzel by climbing her hair.  The witch discovers the affair,  cuts Rapunzel's hair, and casts her from the tower.  She tricks the prince and blinds him as punishment.  The two lovers are lost for a time, but eventually they find each other again and live happily ever after.
