To be successful in AVID, a student has to have the deepest commitment. AVID is basically about deciding that you want to go to college and being committed to working hard. Students also need good study habits and an open mind, willing to accept health.

Ultimately, I think you will need to weigh your own opinions on this issue and determine for yourself what appears to be the most necessary.

I would suggest, however, that the characteristics for success in an AVID program are really no different than the characteristics for success in any academic program. Many of the characteristics that are necessary are matters of disposition rather than physical characteristics or mental abilities. Students need to possess an inquisitive, open mind that allows them to consider multiple points of view and ask questions of all that they read, hear, and witness. Students need to be "coachable" and open to feedback; they need to understand that all learning can always be improved and it is through a recursive cycle of experience, feedback, reflection, and goal setting that we make progress over time. Finally, I would say that students would also need to be aware of their own learning process, understanding what they need individually in order to grow and succeed and being willing and able to ask for assistance to drive that process.
