To me, there are at least a couple of main themes in this book.

First, I would say that it emphasizes that European, scientific, masculine people can conquer any obstacle that they find in their way.  The father in the story has a huge store of knowledge and he uses it to guide his family (all sons) and to enable them to thrive in the wild.

Second, I would say that it is meant to tell us that we need to have faith and rely on God.  There are numerous occasions throughout the book where the father talks about how important God is and the family is constantly praying.
