Organizational design is a management technique allowing the restructuring of existing organizations without losing efficiency and/or productivity. The most important aspect of organizational design is the decision-making process, where the goals of the organization are laid out. By designing an organized structure, both the chain-of-command and the chain-of-communication are clearly defined, and all workers and management are able to see their roles, rules, and goals in the overall picture.
Organizational design makes an effort to have all parts of its structure vital to the end-goal; with multi-skilled workers and open communication, it becomes easier to assign workloads and direct attention towards problem areas. In most cases, the reorganization is focused around the end-goals, but sometimes it is more important to increase overall efficiency without directly addressing the end-goals.
