Although Island of the Blue Dolphins is based on the true story of Juana Maria, there is no real way of knowing everything that happened to her because she simply did not live long enough to tell us.  Her story is certainly fascinating.

She was discovered in 1853 on the island of San Nicolas by a sailor.  There is evidence that she did live alone on the island and was the last of her tribe.  We know nothing about her circumstances there though.  When she was rescued, she only lived for six weeks and never acquired enough language to tell her story.
