Chapter 22: "Healed at Last"

I have always enjoyed the action that takes place in Chapter 22 when Amir squares off with Assef over who will leave with Sohrab. It is the defining moment of Amir's life, coming face-to-face with his old enemy, now a Taliban leader. Amir knows he may not leave alive: Assef has his brass knuckles, and Amir "had never so much as thrown a punch in my entire life." But it is the only way he can free Sohrab and atone for his past sins against Hassan. For Amir, the beating he takes from Assef is cleansing: Amir laughs throughout; he survives and emerges the victor, a hero in the eyes of both Farid and Sohrab. He finally "felt at peace."
