What is one of the most beneficial uses, in your opinion, of the "Slinky" created by Richard James ?
Yes, slinky's are used in multiple science projects. Students love to play with them and figure out how they work. We used Slinky's in science class to demonstrate earthquakes and how they work. It was a lot of fun and the kids had a great time.
The "Slinky" was invented by Richard James in 1945. " Richard made a machine. He designed it himself. When it was finished, it made Slinkys. They were made of 80 ft of wire. The wire came from Sweden." It was first sold in Gimbals Department Store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From personal experience it was a great toy. The toy was safe, it didn't need electricity or batteries. If you had steps, like I did in the home where I grew up, it was so much fun watching "Slinky" walk down the stairs. I would play for many minutes with my Slinky. However, there were other reasons this toy was not just a great toy, "not only is the Slinky an excellent toy, its action also demonstrates a variety of physical forces and principles. The Slinky, like all objects, tends to resist change in its motion. Once you begin the movement by hand the spring will "walk" from a higher position to a lower position all by itself. As an adult, I have a small one on my desk at work that I play with as a stress reliever. I actually move it from hand to hand when I am trying to relax or think.
the slinky in my opinion is great for showing students or kids the way sound moves and different kinds of sound waves. it really helps kids understand and learn about waves.
In physics classes in which I was previously enrolled in, we actually used slinkies as part of an experiment. The experiment was used to demonstrate properties of waves. Slinkies are a great example of how different forms of waves move and what happens when they meet (do they combine, do they simply die out, etc.). So slinkies can be used in physics to demonstrate all the properties of waves in addition to just being a great children's toy.
