There are many compounds that have iron as part of their chemical composition. The ores of iron from which iron is extracted are compounds of iron and oxygen, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. Rust which is formed on objects made of iron and most kinds of steel is also an oxide of iron.

Iron chloride is used a compound used in water treatment and for dyeing clothes. Iron sulfate is the compound used to provide supplemental iron to those with a deficiency of iron.

As a part of organic compounds, iron is present in many proteins called hemes, one of which is hemoglobin that makes our blood red in color.
