The best way to answer this would be to say that the American Revolution took place from 1775 to 1781.  However, there are other possible ways to define the time period in which the war happened.

The 1775 date for the beginning of the war comes from the fact that military fighting started on April 19, 1775.

The 1781 date comes from the fact that major fighting ended with the British defeat at the Battle of Yorktown in October of that year.  However, the war did not officially end until the peace treaty was signed in 1783.

So, the best answer is that the war lasted from 1775 to 1781, but many sources will give the dates as 1775 to 1783 because the peace treaty was not signed until then.
