The objective of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his poem “A Psalm of Life” is to encourage people to live life to the fullest since it short. He admonishes the reader not to let life slip away but to live in good, productive enterprises. As the poem, progresses he suggests that people should not simply follow the accepted path but they should create their own by being “a hero in the strife!” Not only should humankind live good lives they should strive to leave the world a better place so that we can leave “Footprints on the sands of time.” The author’s objective is to encourage the reader to pursue life with the thought that is a gift to live a busy, constructive life, and it is a gift to leave the world a better place upon death.
