In act 3, John Proctor travels into Salem with Mary Warren and instructs her to tell the truth about the witch trials. After Mary Warren testifies that Abigail Williams and the girls are lying, Deputy Governor Danforth asks Proctor what his purpose is for addressing the court and he responds by saying that he hopes to free his wife. Danforth understands the gravity of Mary Warren's claim and the threat that John Proctor poses to his court. He then tells John,
