The Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was an artistic movement that transitioned Western civilization into modernity as Europe emerged from an age dominated by the spread of Christianity. The innovations of the Renaissance stand out due to their dramatic and lasting changes to artistic form. Driven by the competitive demand for religious artwork throughout Italy and the rest of Europe, artists gained the ability to have their work appeal to the ruling class, resulting in art forms highlighting ability and substance as much as subject. These works ranged from sculpture to architecture, painting to performance, as artists began to explore the humanistic works and traditions of Ancient Greece and Rome.

Throughout Europe, artists began to focus their art on realistic portrayals of nature through the experimental use of perspective and light, expanding on classical themes from antiquity that continue to relate to the human condition. Many of these works were brought to life through innovation not only in thought but also in practice. The art that remains from the Renaissance has been preserved in stone and bronze, paintings and poems, and highlights the ingenuity of artists of the time. The role of the artist itself was changed during the Renaissance to identify a person in pursuit of beauty and truth, wherever that might lead them.
