I think that the largest criticism about watching television is going to result in the realities of children watching too much television.  The negative values of passivity and an over-reliance on how complex problems are reduced to simple solutions on television might be two significant issues.  In watching television, children learn passivity as a type of behavior.  The idea of physical activity is significantly reduced with television watching and the dependence on it.  This is not to say that children who watch television are passive, but rather watching too much of it can result in becoming passive and being averse to physical activity.  At the same time, I think that the more dangerous effect of watching too much television is the belief that real life is similar to what is on the television.  Corporate sponsorship and television executives control the "reality" that is presented on television, doing so with agendas that feed their own personal wishes.  Children do not recognize this and might believe it as its own reality.  This becomes problematic in addressing issues and challenges of the gap between real life and television's vision of it.

To me, there are two major negative values promoted by television.

First, there is the idea that violence, promiscuity, drug use and other negative behaviors are cool and acceptable.  TV shows tend to show a great deal of these kinds of behaviors, often without showing any consequences of those behaviors.  This is, for example, why TV is often said to cause kids to be more violent than they otherwise would be.

Second, TV promotes materialism.  As people watch TV, they see people (in shows and especially in ads) enjoying lifestyles that are based on material possessions and which seem very attractive.  Seeing this makes people want those things -- it helps make them define their lives in terms of what material possessions they have.
