The Romans have made life miserable for the Jews in many ways:  slavery, imprisonment, random killings, and a general fear of their ruthlessness which one can never fully anticipate or understand.

Speares' novel is primarily about the two approaches to resolution:  Rosh's path of violent overthrow, and Jesus' path of non-violent resistance.  At first, Daniel is so filled with rage that he will consider nothing more than repaying violence with violence.  But Jesus teaches him that the only thing that will "bend the bow of bronze"  is love.
