Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria generate food from light. The process begins when sunlight is absorbed by specific proteins containing chlorophyll. The food itself comes from carbon dioxide, but the sunlight provides the energy needed to create certain necessary chemical reactions. The carbon dioxide is broken down into a type of sugar and oxygen is emitted as a waste product. Without this vital process, animals like us would not have enough oxygen in our atmosphere to breath. Photosynthesis is basically the opposite of the cellular respiration process that animals use. We give off carbon dioxide as a waste product instead of the oxygen that plants give off.
