As the Goddess of Wisdom and War, Athena is motivated and inspired by men who are intelligent both in and out of war. This characteristic of hers is especially inherent in her relationship with Odysseus.

Odysseus is known as being crafty, as is evidenced in the way he is received by those who had received prophecies of his visit (i.e. King Alcinous, Aeolus, Circe, etc.) and the fact that the idea for the Trojan Horse was his. Athena is appreciative of his art and often comments on how he is like she; this appreciation is what inspires her to remain by his side until he is safely home, and to actively keep him safe along the journey there.
