Cesar Chavez was motivated to form this union by the experiences that he had had as a farmworker and by the conditions that he had seen while he was working as a community organizer.
Chavez himself was born poor and grew up having to work a lot. He never got past the 8th grade because he had to leave school so as to work full time and help his family. While he was working in the fields, he was exposed to the sorts of bad conditions that he wanted to fight through the creation of the union.
